New Orleans today
Starting in late August 2005, an extended event caused by Hurricane Katrina and amplified by inadequate flood protection, environmental degradation, and poor relief strategies led to the deaths of more than 1,400 people and the displacement of more than a million people in Louisiana.
More than ten years into a long recovery process, there are two leading narratives in New Orleans.
One, characterized by optimism, celebrates the revitalization of a city that had long struggled with economic stagnation, poverty, and crime.
The other is characterized by a sense of disillusionment and hopelessness in the wake of years spent struggling to rebuild lives and homes.
“As before, there are two cities here...”
- C. Robertson and R. Fausset, New York Times, 26 August 2015.
